Today marks another special day for Apex, as Billie celebrates a decade at Apex Radio Systems!

From walking through our doors as a shy 16-year-old apprentice to becoming a confident and capable Service Manager, Billie’s journey is a true reflection of what it means to grow with Apex. Her decade-long story with us is not only about climbing the career ladder, but also about evolving personally, facing challenges head-on, and making unforgettable memories along the way.

Billie’s path through Apex has included three key roles – each one building on the last:
 – Business Administration Apprentice (Levels 2 & 3)
 – Office Administrator (alongside achieving Level 3 Team Leader/Supervisor and Level 3 HR Support)
 – Service Manager (her current and well-earned position)

Each step has been marked by hard work, continued learning, and the full support of the Apex team. As Billie put it: “Career progression is something that Jim and Ian have both fully supported me with and I’m forever grateful for that.”

One of the biggest shifts Billie experienced has been her own personal transformation. “I joined Apex as a shy, timid 16-year-old girl straight from school… The Billie that joined in 2015 compared to the Billie now is a completely different version of myself.” Her confidence has blossomed, and she’s achieved significant life milestones – including becoming Mrs. Singh last August. But she’s also experienced the bittersweet side of a long career, noting the retirement of Jim and the loss of Hilary as deeply felt changes.

Here’s to another 10 years, Billie. We are so grateful for all you have done for Apex, and we love to see you thriving!

Billie 10 Years

Last week, we had the pleasure of having Athena Ivison join us from St Bedes, Lanchester, for her work experience. She had a great week gaining firsthand experience in the working world, spending time with each team member and learning about the role each individual plays in making up that team.

Athena is an aspiring engineer, so she spent pleanty of time with our engineering team learning about what they do, and gaining experience into coding radios and testing that everything worked. Her hard work definetly paid off!

We asked Athena a series of questions to get some insight into how her week has been:

Q. What have you been doing this week?
A. On my first day at Apex I was given a plan of what I would be doing throughout the week, this included an introduction to the company and to the different radios they sell; I was introduced to each member of staff and spent time with them discussing their roles; the main teams I spent my week at Apex with was in the service and engineering departments, in service I helped to inspect and clean the radios; and in engineering I assisted in coding radios and testing the repeaters; I met with Chris, who is a senior radio engineer, and discussed his role. Finally, I had a meeting about the future of Apex. This week I have also been putting a project together on bringing work experience into Apex, which I then presented to the general manager, Mark.

Q. What did you enjoy the most about your week at Apex?
A. My favourite day by far at Apex was Wednesday, when I helped to make the cabels and code the radios. To make the cable I cut rubber around the cable and added metal to each side, one side plugs into the repeater, and the other plugs into the antenna. Gaining this expereince helped me to see what real engineers do.

Q. What was the biggest challenge you had to overcome during your experience?
A. From the support I have received from all staff members during my week, I don’t believe I have encountered any challenges.

Q. What are your key takeaways from your work experience?
A. The key takeaways from my time at Apex are the skills and knowledge about who the company are and what they do, as well as the different sectors within the business.

Q. What new skills or knowledge did you gain?
A. Some new skills and knowledge I gained from my week at Apex were the different types of radios and their functions, as well as the different job types that are offered within the business.

Q. What are your career aspirations, and how does this experience fit in?
A. In the future, I aspire to become an electrical, mechanical or radio engineer. This experience has provided me with excellent insight into what it’s like to be an engineer, which will also look great on my CV when I consider future job opportunities.

We thoroughly enjoyed having Athena join us for her work experience, and wish her all the best for the future. You never know, she may be a leading radio engineer at Apex soon!

Have you heard about the Motorola R5?

A tough, compact and built to last device; the Motorola R5 helps to connect teams, boost efficiency and safety, with loud and clear audio cutting through background noise, and intuitive status indications and controls so workers can focus on the task at hand.

With a wide range of features the R5 is the perfect fit for all day long use. Some features include:

Cutting Through The Noise:

The Motorola R5 has loud, clear audio, helping to get the message through the first time, no matter the noise conditions. The R5 has a powerful built-in speaker delivering loud audio so workers can be heard above background noise. With an AI-trained noise suppression algorithm, background noise is reduced, ensuring transmissions are received clearly. The R5 is designed to optimise audio performance across a wide range of workplace environments and worker profiles so users don’t need to sleep adjusting the radio volume.

Motorola R5 within the Safety and Security Ecosystem:

The Motorola safety and security ecosystem helps to protect people, property and places. The Motorola R5 has been built into this ecosystem so you can get more out of your communications investment. Keep your teams aware and streamline critical communications by receiving automatic notifications from your video security and access control systems, sensors and more directly on your device. Extend communications beyond your radio network with interoperability with flexible broadband push-to-talk solutions.

Built to Last:

The Motorola R5 has been designed to withstand the knocks and drops of the workplace so it’ll work as well in the future as it does today. With an IP67 rating and meeting MIL-STD-810 requirements for resistance against harsh environmental conditions like drops, vibration, temperature changes and humidity. The R5 has undergone Motorola’s unique accelerated lifecycle testing, a rigorous regime that stimulates up to 5 years of use to ensure the radios can withstand the demands of the real world, giving users the confidence that their device will perform as needed when it counts the most. To ensure worker safety in areas where flammable substances may be present, the R5 is available with ANSI TIA4950 intrinsically safe certification.

Focus On The Task:

Optimised controls, tactile buttons and long battery run time makes the R5 easy and intuitive to use all day long. Intuitive controls makes the R5 easy to use with minimal training; the channel selector and volume control knobs are easy to operate even when wearing gloves; the large PTT button gives precise performance and programmable buttons are easy to configure. R5’s batteries are small and light, yet packed with enough power to keep the radio running through multiple work shifts, with up to 32 hours runtime from a single charge. The R5 LKP (Limited Key Pad) has a built in GNSS receiver allowing the R5 to be located and tracked in real-time, coordinating workers and assets to enhance safety and productivity.

The Motorola R5 is the perfect replacement for the discontinued Motorola DP2000 series. It’s an ideal handportable for retail, facilities management, security, councils, and waste management sectors.

Contact our team today on 0191 228 0466, alternatively, email us at marketing@apexradio.com to receive a quote or learn more about the R5.

Today marks a remarkable milestone as one of our longest-serving team members, Nicola Burns, celebrates an incredible 30 years of service at Apex Radio Systems.

Since joining the team in 1995, Nic has been an integral part of our journey. Over the decades, she has witnessed – and helped shape – the evolution of the business, the growth of our team, and the expansion of the radio communications industry itself. In a world where career changes are common and companies evolve rapidly, staying with one organisation for three decades is an impressive achievement.

Throughout Nic’s time at Apex, she has consistently embodied our core values of excellence, integrity, and teamwork. Whether it was mentoring new colleagues, delivering outstanding customer service, or contributing to complex projects, her commitment has made a lasting impact. As Apex’s Quality Controller, Nic manages and ensures Apex’s compliace, quality standards, accreditation management, processes and audits to name a few things; however, over the years, Nic has worn many hats – “I can’t remember exact job role names as sometimes I was handling more than one at a time!” From Accounts and Admin to Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, and Quality, Nic has truly done it all.

Over 30 years, change is inevitable. Personally, Nic says the most significant shifts came with the emotional comings and goings of beloved colleagues – “Losing Hilary, Jim retiring, long-standing colleague Richard Heads leaving… those are moments I’ll never forget. And there have been so many people I connected with over the years who have moved on.” Professionally, two milestones stand out. The introduction of the Access Database by Jim revolutionised our daily workflows – “Everything was paper-based before that!” – and the eventual move to a new building after years in the same space marked a huge transition.

There has been no shortage of laughs either. Christmas parties, staff socials, yearly fancy dress fundraising for Red Nose Day (even one year Nic built and wore a Tank). Not to mention one hot summer’s day, when the sunroof of her Corsa was left open…and she came back to find it completely filled with paper shredding. “We won’t name names on one of the culprits! Apex has been a great place to work, and I’ve enjoyed my 30 years here.”

When asked what’s made the past 30 years truly special, the answer is simple: the people. “I’ve basically grown up here. I have deep feelings of loyalty and protectiveness toward Apex. It’s not just a job – it’s part of who I am.”

Ian Curry, Managing Director says, “On behalf of Jim, Myself and the entire Apex team – thank you. We are truly grateful for your loyalty, humour, mentorship, and unmatched dedication over three incredible decades.”

Please join us in congratulating Nic on this incredible achievement – here’s to 30 years of excellence, and many more to come!

Don’t just take our word for it, Evelyn Hegarty from Scotland Police has stated: “ShopWatch was introduced to Edinburgh city centre in April this year and we have already seen early successes thanks to the use of Apex radios. The radios provide a valuable line of instant communication between retailers, the police, and the CCTV operators, and as a direct result of this, criminals have been swiftly apprehended by police, not just for retail crime, but also for threatening behaviour and an assult. Retail staff have expressed that being part of the scheme makes them feel more supported and safer at their work. Many retail staff have been verbally abused and threatened, so the peace of mind that carrying a small radio gives them is invaluable.”

Event season is well and truly underway as our engineering team at Apex HQ are working an exciting hire for an upcoming event in Newcastle. The team can ensure customer safety and communicate easily with additional Hytera units and noise-cancelling headsets to work with their existing two-way radios.

Did you know you can hire additional handsets on a short or long-term basis to work with your existing equipment? At Apex Radio Systems, we are pioneers with finding new ways to provide cost effective solutions for your business. This goes across our range of licenced two-way radios, cellular two-way radios and body-worn cameras.

Coded to the existing radio frequency at the venue, our customers are hiring an additional 40 Hytera HP505 two-way radio handsets, complete with batteries, chargers and d-shape earpieces to accommodate the concert security staff. The additional handsets will help improve communication, safety and efficiency for event in Newcastle city centre.

Have you considered two-way radios for your event?

Two-way radios offer a wide range of benefits for event venues, improving communication, safety, and efficiency. Here are some key advantages:

Improved Communications:

Instant Communication: Two-way radios allow for real-time, direct communication between team members, regardless of their location within the venue.

No Relying on Mobile Phones: – Mobiles can lose signal, run out of battery, or be less reliable in crowded areas, whereas two-way radios operate on dedicated frequencies and don’t rely on a cellular network.

Group Communication: Radios allow for quick communication with multiple people at once, which is useful for coordinating tasks or responding to situations efficiently.

Enhanced Safety

Rapid Emergency Response: In case of emergencies, two-way radios enable immediate communication with security, medical personnel, or staff members to coordinate a swift response.

Tracking & Coordination: Staff members can be tracked or located more easily, allowing event managers to make informed decisions about crowd control or evacuation procedures if necessary.

Increased Efficiency

Streamlined Operations: For large events, radios help streamline operations such as managing vendors, coordinating logistics, or directing attendees, which reduces confusion and delays.

Task Coordination: Event staff can quickly relay instructions, delegate tasks, and update each other on their progress in real-time.

No Interruption from Background Noise: Unlike phone calls, radios work well in noisy environments like concert venues or festivals, ensuring messages are heard clearly.

Cost-Effective

No Phone Bills: Unlike mobiles, there are no monthly fees for calls or data with standard licenced radios. This can lead to significant cost savings, especially for large teams working over several days

No Data Usage: Two-way radios don’t use mobile data, which could otherwise add to the cost of cellular services.

Why should you choose Apex Radio Systems for your hire?

✔ Best prices guaranteed

✔ A diverse and top of the range equipment available

✔ Long and short term hires available

✔ 24-hour replacement on a faulty radio

✔ Next day delivery available

20th May 2025, our annual golf day at Close House.

Set in the beautiful and serene Tyne Valley, only seven miles outside the centre of Newcastle and nestled against the north bank of the River Tyne, the 250-year-old Close House estate has been lovingly formed into two of the best courses in the country. On 20th May 2025, Apex Radio Systems’ staff, customers and suppliers took to the Colt Course to play a round on the stunning grounds for our annual golf day and dinner.

A fantastic day was spent on one of the top 100 courses in the UK, as we welcomed our customers from all over the UK. Blue skies, great company, questionable golf, but memories made nonetheless.

The day began with networking and demonstration opportunities showcasing the latest Motorola Systems two-way radios, the R2, R5 and VT100 body-worn camera. Not to mention our Hytera ShopWatch fleet of HP5s, and the nationwide two-way radio, the Icom IP503h. Our customers in attendance included facility managers, hospitality managers, retail security managers, manufacturers and power stations employees. With a range of industries comes a range of needs and requirements, which our demo fleet delivered.

“Another hugely successful event by the team at Apex Radio Systems. We’re able to bring together our customers and suppliers to network and showcase products – whilst enjoying the great course that is Close House. We’re lucky to demonstrate the latest two-way radios and body-worn cameras offerings with such an amazing backdrop.” – Phil Wynne, Business Development Manager.

Armed with factor 30, sunglasses and caps, it was a huge success and delight to welcome back customers to our annual event.
