Three events, one shared need: supporting Children’s Cancer North with reliable communication

A busy fundraising run, a remembrance event for bereaved families and an activity day for children and young people affected by cancer each place different demands on an organising team.

For Children’s Cancer North, clear communication helps bring each of these events together.

This year, Apex Radio Systems has been proud to provide handheld radios and earpieces free of charge for three of the charity’s events: the Children’s Cancer Run, Memory Day and Let’s Move.

The charity’s feedback shows how communication supports the work happening behind the scenes, helping teams coordinate activities and deliver events for the people attending.

Around 80 radios supporting the Children’s Cancer Run

The Children’s Cancer Run brings together more than 10,000 people to run and fundraise for one important cause.

With a large, busy event to coordinate, the charity used around 80 radios to help its team stay in contact throughout the day.

For organisers, an event of this scale means people working across different areas, with different responsibilities. Being able to share updates and coordinate without gathering everyone in one place helps the team keep activities moving.

Children’s Cancer North described Apex’s support as “invaluable for not just our charity’s core team but those we support too.”

Supporting the smooth running of Memory Day

Memory Day serves a very different purpose. It brings together bereaved families who have lost a child to cancer, giving them the opportunity to remember their loved ones.

The setting and atmosphere differ from a mass-participation fundraising event, but dependable communication remains essential to the organising team.

As the charity explained, clear and reliable communication helps the event run smoothly so families can have that time to remember.

It is a reminder that the value of event communication cannot be measured by attendance figures alone. Smaller, sensitive gatherings also need careful coordination and a team that can stay in touch.

Connecting activity teams at Let’s Move

More recently, Apex supported Let’s Move, an event encouraging children and young people undergoing or having completed cancer treatment to remain active to support their recovery.

The event takes place across a large venue, with activities in different locations. Radios helped the team coordinate and prepare activity stations with the resources they needed.

Here, the communication requirement centred on connecting separate activity areas: helping colleagues share updates, prepare spaces and coordinate resources across the venue.

What this means when planning short-term radio hire

These three events show why a useful hire conversation starts with how your team will work on the day.

The number of radios matters, but so do the people using them, the areas they need to cover and the information they need to share.

When planning your next hire, consider:

  • Where will they be working? Explain the venue layout, separate activity areas and any indoor or outdoor spaces.
  • What accessories will help? Discuss whether earpieces would suit particular roles or working environments.
  • How will equipment be managed? Plan who will distribute radios, explain their use and collect them afterwards.
  • What has changed since your last event? A new layout, larger attendance or additional activities may change your requirements.

At Apex, these details help us understand what you need from a short-term hire and recommend an appropriate setup.

Proud to support Children’s Cancer North

Each event supports the charity’s mission of making life better for children with cancer.

We are proud that our equipment and support have played a part in helping its team deliver those experiences.
