An Apprentice’s 10-Year Journey to Office Manager
Apex Radio Systems is proud to support internal career growth and reward those who show dedication, commitment and reliability to the business – someone who has excelled in all aspects of this is our Office Manager, Billie Singh. Her journey highlights the value of apprenticeships and long-term career growth within our business.
Billie entered Apex as a shy 16-year-old apprentice, and since then has progressed through her career – from business administration apprentice to office administrator, to service manager and now office manager. We’re all so proud of Billie’s journey, which shows how apprenticeships can lead to successful careers in business administration and management.
We asked Billie some questions to sum up her time at Apex:
What originally drew you to Apex?
“When I left school, I attended an apprenticeship open day where the provider introduced a range of vacancies. I clearly remember coming across the opportunity with Apex Radio Systems and being immediately drawn to it.”
Today, Apex is the only company Billie has worked for – a testament to our supportive environment and opportunities for career progression in apprenticeships.
Did you imagine you would be here 10 years later?
“Honestly, no. Apex is the only job I’ve ever had. I feel like I really struck lucky by finding a company like this, and it’s given me the opportunity to grow, develop my skills, and build a career in an area I genuinely enjoy.”
How did your role evolve from apprentice to Office Manager?
“I began my career as an apprentice, learning the fundamentals of the business while supporting the team with day-to-day administrative tasks. As I gained experience and confidence, I gradually took on greater responsibility, from organising jobs and managing complex customer enquiries to supporting internal processes. I then progressed to managing the admin department, which later evolved into the technical department, expanding my team from 2 to 7 employees. In this capacity, my role transitioned to service manager. During this time I completed an HR qualification, showing my dedication to Apex and my role. As I became increasingly involved in the overall operation of the office, I focused on improving systems and ensuring organisational efficiency. This ongoing development, along with the trust and support of the team, led to my promotion to Office Manager, where I now oversee daily operations and ensure the smooth running of the office.”
What skills did you learn at each stage of your career?
“As a business administration apprentice, I developed strong organisational skills, attention to detail, and effective communication across a variety of methods. I gained experience and confidence, I learned to prioritise tasks, solve problems under pressure, propose solutions, and liaise effectively with both internal teams and external customers. In my role as Service Manager, I refined my leadership abilities, enhanced my team management skills, and learned to delegate effectively while maintaining high standards and quality. Being involved in HR has also allowed me to develop internal relationships, improve communication, offer solutions/advice, and resolve issues. As Office Manager, I have further developed strategic thinking, process optimisation, and a comprehensive understanding of business operations. These skills enable me to perform my role efficiently and contribute to the smooth running and growth of the organisation.”
What role taught you the most, and why?
“Although not a full-time role, my experience in HR has taught me the most. It has required me to navigate and resolve sensitive situations, develop a professional approach to decision-making, and learn how to balance the needs of employees with the strategic objectives of the business.”
What has been the most challenging part of your journey?
“Transitioning from managing 2 employees to 7 when I became service manager challenged me to quickly adapt my leadership approach, delegate responsibilities effectively, and ensure that team performance and quality standards were constantly met. As the largest team in the company, challenges were presented, and the most opportunities for growth and development were offered.”
Her leadership skills demonstrate how stepping outside of your comfort zone can accelerate career development and leadership skills.
What achievement are you most proud of?
“A significant milestone for me was achieving my level 3 Human Resources Support; it’s something I’m genuinely proud of. Not only does it represent my dedication and the effort I have invested in my knowledge and skills, but it also reflects my commitment to personal and professional growth. This qualification has given me the confidence to take on greater responsibility, contribute more effectively to the organisation, and support colleagues and employees with professionalism and expertise.”
How has the company changed since you started, and how did you handle it?
“Since I joined Apex in 2015, significant changes have happened. Navigating the challenges of COVID, transitioning to a completely new system, and relocating to a new building are just a fw of the main changes I’ve experienced – each of these is a complex and substantial project. I approached these changes by remaining focused and adaptable throughout every stage, balancing immediate tasks with consideration for future impacts. I provided support to colleagues wherever possible and maintained clear communication to ensure smooth transitions and minimal disruption to the business.”
Billie’s adaptability and communication skills ensured smooth transitions and continued business success.
What do you enjoy most about being Office Manager?
“I enjoy many aspects of my role, but I mostly enjoy finding solutions to the challenges we face. This ranges from addressing everyday issues, such as restocking supplies, to organising improvements to the workplace environment. I strive to be approachable in my role, ensuring that all staff feel comfortable raising concerns and confident that I will take action to resolve them effectively. I also enjoy the fun parts of my role, such as organising company charity events and staff socials!”
What keeps you motivated after 10 years?
“Genuinely enjoying my role has been a key factor in keeping me motivated – I love my job and the people I work with, which naturally drives me to contribute to the growth of the business. I’ve been given multiple opportunities to progress within Apex, and I’m eager to play an active role in the company’s ongoing journey and long-term plans.”
What makes Apex different to other companies?
“As Apex is family-run, I have always viewed my colleagues as an extended family, which I believe is rare in organisations today. Jim, Ian and everyone else a Apex have supported me in ways that have helped me grow professionally and personally. Their guidance, encouragement and trust have given me the confidence to take on new responsibilities, develop my skills, and progress within the company. The sense of support has made me feel truly valued and motivates me to contribute my best to Apex every day.”
What helped you grow into a leadership role?
“The support and guidance from Jim and Ian have been instrumental in my professional and personal growth, ultimately helping me step into a leadership role. Other key factors include the hands-on experience I gained starting as an apprentice, the progressive responsibilities I was entrusted with, the mentorship and support I received, opportunities for continuous learning, and the strong relationships I have built throughout my time at Apex.”
What advice would you give to someone starting their career as an apprentice?
“The main piece of advice is to be proactive and open to learning. Take every opportunity to ask questions and understand how the business works from the ground up. Be willing to take on new challenges, even if they feel outside your comfort zone; each challenge is an opportunity to develop your skills and confidence. Build strong relationships with your colleagues and seek guidance from mentors – they can provide invaluable support and insight. Finally, stay patient and persistent; growth takes time, but dedication and a positive attitude will open doors for future progression.”
We’re incredibly proud of Billie’s achievements and her progression within Apex Radio Systems. Her journey reflects our commitment to employee development, apprenticeships and internal promotion.
