Today marks a remarkable milestone as one of our longest-serving team members, Nicola Burns, celebrates an incredible 30 years of service at Apex Radio Systems.
Since joining the team in 1995, Nic has been an integral part of our journey. Over the decades, she has witnessed – and helped shape – the evolution of the business, the growth of our team, and the expansion of the radio communications industry itself. In a world where career changes are common and companies evolve rapidly, staying with one organisation for three decades is an impressive achievement.
Throughout Nic’s time at Apex, she has consistently embodied our core values of excellence, integrity, and teamwork. Whether it was mentoring new colleagues, delivering outstanding customer service, or contributing to complex projects, her commitment has made a lasting impact. As Apex’s Quality Controller, Nic manages and ensures Apex’s compliace, quality standards, accreditation management, processes and audits to name a few things; however, over the years, Nic has worn many hats – “I can’t remember exact job role names as sometimes I was handling more than one at a time!” From Accounts and Admin to Sales, Marketing, Customer Service, and Quality, Nic has truly done it all.
Over 30 years, change is inevitable. Personally, Nic says the most significant shifts came with the emotional comings and goings of beloved colleagues – “Losing Hilary, Jim retiring, long-standing colleague Richard Heads leaving… those are moments I’ll never forget. And there have been so many people I connected with over the years who have moved on.” Professionally, two milestones stand out. The introduction of the Access Database by Jim revolutionised our daily workflows – “Everything was paper-based before that!” – and the eventual move to a new building after years in the same space marked a huge transition.
There has been no shortage of laughs either. Christmas parties, staff socials, yearly fancy dress fundraising for Red Nose Day (even one year Nic built and wore a Tank). Not to mention one hot summer’s day, when the sunroof of her Corsa was left open…and she came back to find it completely filled with paper shredding. “We won’t name names on one of the culprits! Apex has been a great place to work, and I’ve enjoyed my 30 years here.”
When asked what’s made the past 30 years truly special, the answer is simple: the people. “I’ve basically grown up here. I have deep feelings of loyalty and protectiveness toward Apex. It’s not just a job – it’s part of who I am.”
Ian Curry, Managing Director says, “On behalf of Jim, Myself and the entire Apex team – thank you. We are truly grateful for your loyalty, humour, mentorship, and unmatched dedication over three incredible decades.”
Please join us in congratulating Nic on this incredible achievement – here’s to 30 years of excellence, and many more to come!
